The vast majority of electrical power transmission involves a 3 phase HVAC system. The reasons for choosing HVDC rather than HVAC in a specific case are very complex. Through this modular three day HVDC training course, DNV GL meets the need for more knowledge and understanding of this subject.

The course covers three days. The first day starts with an introduction of why HVDC is increasingly applied in power systems. HVDC LCC technology and its main applications are explained, including the associated DC and AC equipment, followed by VSC technology. This substation day concludes with a control system module for both LCC and VSC. The second day is devoted to cables, both sub-terrain and sub-sea, from specification to commissioning and failure investigations. Day three of the course covers overhead lines, including conversion of HVAC lines to HVDC.

After this course participants have gained in-depth understanding of the various building blocks, types of HVDC technologies, their typical applications and the methods that can be used to ensure the quality of your HVDC projects. You will understand how HVDC systems are specified and designed and which developments can be expected in the future.
